About

Hi, I am Dr. Chantal Schafers. I have spent most of my life here on Treaty 6 Territory. I was born and raised in the Edmonton area, and I spent several years earning my doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Saskatchewan. I have been a Registered Psychologist since 2019. Having studied and practiced in the field of clinical psychology, I have extensive training and experience with a wide range of psychological conditions and life challenges. I offer services to individuals ages 18 years and up.

Therapy: The foundation of my approach is building a space where my clients feel safe, respected, and heard. Therapy is guided by evidence-based practices and tailored to the individual’s needs and preferences. I find this allows people to grow as they gain new perspectives and ways of being, all the while drawing upon their inherent strengths and resilience. The therapeutic modalities used depend on what is most appropriate for the person in question. These might include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT; including schema-informed approaches), Interpersonal Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Strength-Based Approaches, Person-Centered Therapy, and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.

Assessment: I specialize in comprehensive psychodiagnostic assessments. These may focus on neurodivergence (e.g., ADHD, Autism) and/or various mental health difficulties (e.g., trauma/PTSD, anxiety, mood difficulties, psychosis, impulsivity, aggression, self-harm, substance abuse). My assessment approach is to take a step back and consider a wide range of possible explanations for the client’s symptoms, behaviours, and/or traits. I find this approach leads to a multifaceted understanding of the individual’s experiences and works to prevent misdiagnosis. It is my intention that each client walks away feeling confident with the findings and recommendations, knowing that it was conducted with diligence, expertise, and integrity. For those seeking assessments for possible ADHD or Autism, please know that I take a neuroaffirmative approach.
